Thematic map - Bottom types

Map information

The data set is taken from the Norwegian Geological Survey's map portal and consists of over 62,000 data points from Norwegian fjords and coastal areas. The data points have been collected by the Mapping Authority's sea division in connection with depth mapping. The data points give an indication of what type of bottom can be expected (for example, whether there are coarse-grained or fine-grained sediments). The distribution of sediments on the bottom is closely linked to the physical conditions and tells a lot about the underwater landscape, currents, wave washing and sedimentary processes.

The map below shows coverage for the data. Zoom in to see if there is data for your area. Click on the symbol in the upper right corner to see the map in full version at www.geonorge.no.

The different bottom types are represented by dynamic icons as shown above. These are automatically scaled according to the zoom level on the chartplotter. The map layer can be switched on and off via the menu on the chartplotter. It is also possible to switch certain bottom types on and off, e.g. if you just want to see "sand" or "gravel".
